Mountain Fork River & the Ouachita National Forest
Much of what makes River’s Edge special and unique is that you’ll have a number of outdoor options. Right from your cabin’s door you’re able to walk down to the river and hop in a canoe for an evening of easy paddling to take in the scenery on the beautiful Mountain Fork River. High bluffs, rocky shoals, and clear water combine for breathtaking views. You can do a picnic along a secluded riverside location ideal for a romantic afternoon in the shade of towering Oaks. If you enjoy fishing, then pull on your waders for a morning of fly-fishing along the shoals in front of the cabin. Take a canoe up or down stream to some of the more seldom fished spots for feisty Smallmouth Bass, Spotted Bass, Sunfish, and big Goggle-eye Perch. Yet another possibility for fishing is our private, stocked pond, which is full of black bass and big bluegill.
Other options include hiking or mountain biking over riverside trails and along old, seldom-traveled roads. ATV’s are welcome—we have over 400 acres of property available to you. Kids can spend days filled with discovery playing in the woods around the cabin and and they especially enjoy splashing and exploring along the rocks of the riverbank.
The Fall months find River's Edge brilliantly laced with color. The hardwoods boast of gold, red, and violet during Autumn, with the Pine and Holly providing a year-round splash of green. Although the peak time for colors of fall foliage may vary from year to year, the best time frame tends to be from October 15 through November 15, with the best colors usually the first full week of November. Color may be visible as early as October 1 and sometimes hangs around as late as Thanksgiving.
The Talimena Scenic Drive, a mountain top drive extending
from Talihina,
Oklahoma, to Mena, Arkansas, lies only a half-hour drive
across the majestic Kiamichi Mountains to the north, and is a
must-see during October through early November. More scenery abounds to the south at Broken
Bow Lake, in and around Beavers Bend State Park, forty
minutes away.
Back at the cabin you can build a campfire in the nearby pit and spend
the evening just "taking it in" on the open deck out back where
you can grill your favorite steak. Trails along the river offer some excellent
opportunities to see the wildlife that abounds here. There are birds
galore for the "Bird
Watchers", in these pristine woods; Pileated and Downy Woodpeckers,
Kingfishers, Blue Herons, and Bald Eagles, just to name a few.
The nights are quiet at The River's Edge. No sirens, highways, or other sounds of civilization - just the sound of the nearby rapids. Relax in the Jacuzzi , then share popcorn in front of the fireplace. Enjoy the crackle of the fire or sit out on the porch and listen to the Whi-por-wills and the often-heard Owls, which call into the night. You'll want to rise early, though, in time to hear the boom of an old gobbler, strutting on the pine ridge across the river.
With Spring come the Dogwoods, Redbuds, and Wildflowers of all kinds... yet the Winters at The River's Edge are special. During the colder months the river takes on a blue-green hue that is soothing to the eyes. It's then that you'll get opportunities to observe Bald Eagles that winter here on the Mountain Fork. Winter also provides guests with opportunities to see Deer, Turkey, and Squirrel; and Raccoon, Mink and Beaver may be watched along the riverbank, with little foliage to hinder the view.
